Health insurance for international students?

All residents in Germany are obligated to have health insurance, as well as all students in Germany. You are free to choose a statutory health insurance plan, for example, the AOK/TK/ DAK ..., or one provided by a private Health Insurance Company. Health insurance fees are currently approximately €130 per month. This fee is required for the university enrollment, and due from the semester of your enrollment (October -March/April-September), doesn’t matter you did arrive in Germany or not. As a result, doctor visits, hospital stays, and medical treatments generally require no additional fees or payments.

Student rates are only valid for students less than 30 years of age and during the first 14 semesters of study. For all other cases, health insurance is not available at the student tariff, but at higher rates. Network for International Students DEGIS TK Health Insurance for international students

Students coming from the European Union States and from other countries where international insurance agreements exist are able to claim health insurance benefits in Germany without being insured locally. This possibility exists whenever students are insured by other family members or by an individual health insurance policy in their home country. In these cases, policyholders must certify their right to health insurance benefits by means of a special form that must be submitted (upon arrival in the Federal Republic of Germany) to a local office of the chosen health insurance. Your health insurance company will then issue a German Health Insurance Certificate.

We do recommend the purchase of third-party liability insurance as well. It is furthermore sensible to insure your belongings so that you can be reimbursed if they get damaged or stolen.

EU-Citizens:

Students from the EU, or from countries that have entered into a Social Security Agreement with Germany, may bring their "European Health Insurance Card" (EHIC) which they receive in their home country. Please be informed that it's highly recommended to change this EU card immediately after arrival in Magdeburg at the German health insurance of your choice.

What type of visa do I need?

You will need a visa to enter Germany unless you have the nationality of an EU/EER country, the United States, Canada, or others. Immigration regulations are always subject to change. Therefore, it is necessary to contact the German embassy in your home country to obtain specific information on entry requirements as soon as possible. Experience has shown that the visa processing times vary considerably from country to country, ranging from 2 weeks to 4 months. However, visa processing times may take much longer.

If you would like to study in Germany and require a visa, please apply for a student visa. This student visa has a validity of 3-6 months. Please do not travel to Germany on a tourist visa, since you cannot apply for a residence permit for studies on the basis of a tourist visa!

OVGU Visa Information

Can I arrive with a tourist visa which is valid for three months?
Which formalities must I complete in Magdeburg?

Right after arriving in Magdeburg, you need to go to the city hall (Bürgerbüro) to register. You need to have a housing contract for that, as well as other documents.

You will need a valid residence permit for your stay for studies in Magdeburg (a student visa is only a provisional residence permit valid for the first 90-180 days). To apply for this permit, you must go to the Foreigners Immigration Department (Ausländerbehörde) latest 6 weeks before your visa expires and present your passport, two biometric photographs, your student identification, proof of enrollment (or the letter of admission to the university), proof of financial support (non-EU citizen has to prove ca. 900,- per month for a year), proof of accommodation, and proof of medical insurance.

The residence permit will be granted for a year or two and not longer than the scheduled duration of the study program. An extension can be applied for before the previous permit expires. A processing fee of 60-100 must be paid for each renewal.

If an international student needs assistance in settling the above procedure, the SIMP-SON team will be happy to help.

www.isp.ovgu.de

Is it mandatory to take part in the ON-Boarding week?

As a result, it is imperative for all first-semester students to attend these info sessions in order to connect with faculty personnel, meet fellow students, and ultimately successfully complete their studies.

Late arrival by visa matter? What do I need to observe?

Students are urged to arrive in Magdeburg prior to the ON-Boarding week. No deferrals can be made for individual students.

We would like to inform you, that we are an in-person university by following strict regulations. For all, especially for international students, it is very important to be present in Magdeburg, on campus. Doesn't matter that we understand your problems to get a student visa in time. Here on campus, we can support you much better with a stable internet connection, library access, study counseling, and no time differences. Our popular SIMP-SON buddy program is offering several in-person networking events. From experience, we can tell that students taking online classes, studying from home, and struggling a lot with their studies because of several issues. We even had students applying for a visa who received a rejection because they could not prove that they were studying.

Arrive by October 3, latest, and take part in our mandatory introduction session and classes.
The mandatory introduction program for new students can be found online: www.isp.ovgu.de

Students arriving later we have to inform you that your arrival during the semester is causing a lot of stress. Classes will start promptly on October 13th, and you will miss important lecture content, information, language registration deadlines, etc. The exam registration is taking place in November, and before you can register you should try out the chosen compulsory elective courses (master's). Furthermore, the workload of modules (courses) is calculated from the start of the semester. Entering classes later is possible but can not be recommended. Courses are anyway very challenging.

Because of these circumstances, we can not provide a late arrival to OVGU students. In the worst case, you have to reapply/ postpone your master's.  Admission can not be postponed for our limited places study program IMME (ORBA. But you can ask to be taken on the ranking list again.

However, we hope that you can solve your visa and arrival matters in time and start your studies at OVGU as soon as possible.

All information about studies, schedules, and events will be published on our study program website.
Please check out the “ON-BOARDING" section by the middle of September on www.isp.ovgu.de
